Primary iron metallurgy is characterised by significant direct carbon dioxide emissions, due to the carbothermic reduction of ore. This paper deals with electrification primary production developing a new and innovative process for carbon-free metallic from bauxite residue which byproduct alumina industry. It based on electroreduction oxides suspensions in concentrated sodium hydroxide solutions, at low temperature normal pressure. The oxide source used present study provided MYTILINEOS SA, Metallurgy Business Unit-Aluminium Greece. research preliminary screening as potential raw material performing experiments small-scale electrolysis cell. first results presented here show that can be produced high Faradaic efficiency (>70%). Although optimisation needed, novel shows great promise.
